According to recent reports, Sky City Auckland is looking at obtaining a wide range of new gaming machines and tables as part of a million-dollar expansion. Stuff.co.nz reports that Sky City Auckland is currently working out a deal which will cost the casino $350 million to build a new convention centre and expand its gaming floor.
The local government will support the construction of the new convention centre only if it does not cost taxpayers any money. As such, talks are still ongoing and both sides are willing to make concessions in order to make the construction of the new convention centre possible.
One piece of controversy has arisen, however. Rumours state that the casino is looking to obtain 900 to 1000 new table games and poker machines. When asked if this were true, Economic Development Minister Steven Joyce refused to comment. However, he did state that he would be fine with providing the games to the casino if the company could prove that it would be of little cost to taxpayers and that it is a responsible decision.
