Online gambling has always been very popular in New Zealand and Australia, but officials are only just catching wind of the craze. A recent study has revealed that a large portion of residents take part in online gambling, alert politicians to the possibility of regulating the activity.
The researcher was conducted by Southern Cross University, consisting of a survey of about 6500 participants. Of those surveyed, more than half admitted to having gambled online. Many of the respondents stated that had been gambling online for at least the past six years.
For the past decade, the Australian and New Zealand governments have been working hard to ban online casino games. Prosecuting operators that offer their services to players, politicians want to keep the activity out. However, residents have been gambling online for quite some time now, and it is unlikely that anything will be able to get them to stop.
So, the government should focus its energies on regulating and licensing online gambling. Now, that pokie reform is dead, this seems like the best route to go.
